The Ottawa MMM Party – July 20th

ottawa_bluesfestThe good people of Canada’s capital region have been requesting firmly that we all get together this month while the Mustache family is still in town. So your call has been heeded and it looks like we’re going to make a pretty good party out of it.

Originally planning to set something up for us in one of the nice bayfront parks, I was upstaged by a letter from a reader who has offered us her whole fancy house near downtown to run wild in while we talk about bikes or recipes or investments over a few beers.

So here are the details if you would like to come out and meet your mustachioed kin:

Time: Saturday night, July 20th, 6:00 PM -> ???
Place: The Vanier neighborhood near Richelieu Park. Easily accessed by bus or bike from most of Ottawa, but with some on-street parking nearby.

Obviously, non-car transportation is encouraged, and people who bike there get their drinks on me, as has become a tradition for these gatherings.

Format: A houseparty-style gathering, informal potluck for food (bring some drinks and food if you can, and some treats will be there as well). Kids are welcome, although it will probably be slightly busy and mostly adults, if past gatherings are any hint. And very fun. You might bring your best ideas and even a business card or two, as business enterprises and even the odd romance have been spawned at these things ;-)
Mr. and Mrs. MM will both be there, as well as Ottawa’s own Mr. Frugal Toque.

How to Get Your Invitation:

Once you are fairly sure you’ll make it, send an email with a brief hello to MustacheMeetUp@gmail.com. This account will email you back the exact address of the venue, as well as letting our hosts keep track of how many people are planning to come. We only have space for about 100 people, so get your plans made and I hope to meet you there!

Any planned meetings in Florida? It’s sunny year round here.

I think Florida is a great idea! Plus, what better place to ride your bike than Florida… That is if sweating is one of your hobbies. For real though, lets get one to Florida. We are the first to make a request after all ;)

Wow, actually going to be in Ottawa this week visiting my girlfriend! Definitely going to try and convince her to go to this!

May even pop by if she already has other plans… Will send an email shortly after I get a chance to discuss with her!

That’s too bad we were planning on dropping by for a bit at the park… going with our 6 month-old is probably not a good idea!

Hope you guys have a blast!

Sounds like fun. I don’t go to many parties anymore, but this is one I would have liked to attend if it was closer. Stay safe and have fun!

So glad to hear you are coming to Canada, too bad Ottawa to is a bit too far to treck for me. You’ll have to consider Nova Scotia at some point – I might know a great place to host a MMM type fiesta :) Have a great time in the Nation’s Capital!

Looks epic! Unfortunately it’s not very ‘mustachian’ to be jetting off to far-flung places – but if you do ever end up in England I’d be more than happy to help arrange a MMM gathering!

Wonder how many people in the UK would be up for a gathering, even without the presence of the big cheese himself… I’d happily organise a MMM themed gathering – provided Mr. Money Mustache’s permission to use his name for it of course. Any interest?

Canada and the West Coast get to have all these fun get togethers… No love for the southeast :(

Agreed on needing to have something somewhere in the southeast. You should plan one for fall ’round these here parts. Summer isn’t much fun weather-wise.

Looking forward to meeting the MMM Community of the Gatineau/Ottawa! I’ll do my best to put up my brightest smile despite having gum surgery two days prior to the event, hah!

    Au plaisir!

Only 3 hours away and no cash to get there.

Maybe next year Toronto? I can drive there and back and I wouldn’t need a hotel room.

I think it’s great that everybody loves MMM, but can’t you just hold a get together in your area without the man (and Mrs. MM) present? I thought the ideas were the magic and meeting people who think and live by them is what is fun/special. If Mr. MM jets around the world holding celebrity gatherings, that sounds a lot like the consumerist mentality we’re all supposed to be shunning.

    Feel free to disagree.

I definitely agree! These partygoers are not there because they love Mr. and Mrs. MM, it’s because they wanted an excuse to get together anyway. You just need a sufficiently bossy person to serve as the catalyst for any given location.

And you’re right that I would be a big fakeypants if I traveled around just to go to parties. In fact, I actively discourage readers from traveling more than a short distance by car to even bring themselves to one.

I forgot to mention: anyone who bikes to an MMM event gets their beers on me – a tradition started in Seattle.

One would think this would be an expensive promise, right? Or maybe the amount of biking by mustachians is too low for my taste? Who drives to a party anyway?…

Ha ha! A most welcome tradition :-) Since any beer I carry over the 13 miles biking distance in this hot weather would be unfit for Mustachian consumption!

A beer handed to me by MMM, definitely worth the bike ride!

Spot on comment. Instead of requesting MMM’s presence in every town/city across the globe as if he were some sort of celebrity, why don’t people just organize gatherings amongst fellow mustachians in their area?

Great party you guys! thanks so much to the host Crista and her family. Our family of 4 had a great time. Didn’t have the chance to talk to Mr. or Mrs. Mustache but met some awesome like minded folks in Ottawa. Food was delicious and mostly vegetarian which was a treat for us! Muchos gracias.

We had a great time too – awesome location with that view across to the city! Don’t think I’ve seen better!

Most (?) people came on bikes, and you could hear everyone chatting away.

AND I got to shake The Man’s Hand! Woop!

It seemed like a fair number of people were new blog readers too, so that’s good I think.

AAAARG! Went on vacation the day before this was announced and got back the day after it happened! On the upside I’m glad to hear this is an annual trip. Maybe next summer there will be another gathering?

Several times I’ve stared at your picture trying to remember if I ever passed you in the halls or cubicles at the “Big Nerd Ranch” on Moodie Drive. I don’t think you’ve ever said specifically which hich tech company you worked for before departing for the states, but I like to think we were once coworkers.

Love your blog. I only wish it had been around when I was in my 20s. I’ll be retiring early by most people’s standards (~50ish) but if I’d had this site to inspire and inform me back then I too could have retired in my 30s. No point crying over spilled milk I know, but damn some days I really wish I had a do over.

Dang. That meetup was about 1.5km from our house (just the other side of the Rideau River). We left *that* morning for a 300km week-long annual family bicycle trip.

How was the meetup? I really wish we could have attended.

Crista, Svet, conchita, Dave, Slackerjo, JMK: How about we do another one in a couple of months? I’d offer our back yard/lane for the occasion:

As for carrying beer by bike… I calculated I can carry *fourteen* 50 litre kegs with this bike setup:

I am curious about your thoughts on the choice between donating small amount of money along the way and large amount later in your life. From the investment perspective, if one has a decent knowledge of investment, long-term investment will probably generate bigger fortune due to compounding effect. If that is true, a more rational perspective might be to wait until later in your life in order to make bigger impact (in terms of the amount of money you donated). Does that mean we should resist “feeling good/happy” and be more patient?
